My name is Jonny Sopotiuk. I’m a community & political organizer

I’m currently available for project work

I’m based in Vancouver, British Columbia with active projects in Canada and the United Kingdom

I believe that organizing for power happens in the workplaces, our communities, with neighbours, At the Ballot Box & in our social spaces. When we build & fight together we will win.

Building POWER

I’ve dedicated my career of over 20 years as a full-time organizer in the student, union, and social justice movements to building community power. I am a proud queer feminist and devote my time to Indigenous, Refugee, Migrant Worker, Worker Ownership, and Palestinian Solidarity campaigns.

I believe in intersectional community-led movements and the redistribution of resources for equity and justice. We must dismantle the systems that concentrate power and divide us to solve the crises of our time.

Projects That give me pride

  • BIPOC-Led Abolish ICE Organizers in Minneapolis

In 2026, I supported the development of Tending the Soil’s rapid response campaign that has raised over $1.8 million USD for frontline organizers in Minnesota.

  • Union Worker Ownership Development Project

In 2022, I Co-Founded the Union Cooperative Initiative, a non-profit solidarity cooperative building worker ownership and power in British Columbia.

  • Camp Aurora Queer & Trans Youth Leadership Camp

In 2007, I co-founded Camp Aurora, a queer and trans youth sleep away leadership outdoors summer camp hosted by the Rainbow Resource Centre in Manitoba, Canada.

  • COVID-19 Worker-Led Stitchers Cooperative

In 2020, at the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic, I worked with Gigi Mercado on the launch of SCOOP the Stitchers Co-op and fabric mask making initiative.

  • Survivor-Led #EndEyeCheck Global Campaign

I’m proud to stand beside UK-based survivors Zoe Watts and Amanda Stanhope as they campaign to put an end Drug Facilitated Rape through their survivor-led global campaign.

  • OMNISCIENT Curated Art Show in New York City

I was honoured to have my work featured in OMNISCIENT: Queer Documentation in an Image Culture by Avram Finkelstein at the Leslie Lohman Gallery in 2021-22.

  • The Burnaby Citizens Association Campaign

I was proud to manage the Burnaby Citizens Association 2022 Election campaign. We elected 13 of 15 candidates to municipal office with progressive majorities at all levels.

  • Burnaby Welcomes Ukraine Organizing Project

With the solidarity of local NDP Member of Parliament Peter Julian & support of our Firefighter Unions we raised over $70,000 and welcomed displaced Ukrainians to Burnaby, BC.

  • Seize the Means of Production Video Co-op

After a decade of collaboration, we formed STM Video Co-op to support movement storytelling. The worker-run co-op reinvests surplus (profit on commercial projects) into a solidarity fund to cover production costs for equity-denied community campaigns.
